Cultural Holidays in the Vinschgau

Between Castles, Abbeys, and Waal Trails

The Vinschgau has a long and eventful history. Accordingly, the valley’s culture is rich and diverse, shaped by castles and abbeys. Between April and November, Upper Vinschgau offers many opportunities to combine cultural sightseeing with active outdoor recreation. The region is characterized by its historic architecture, diverse museums, and living traditions.

Glurns – The Smallest Town in South Tyrol

Glurns is known for its fully preserved city walls, narrow streets, town gates, and arcades. The town offers various cultural venues, small artisan shops, and cafés. A stroll through the old town gives a direct impression of its medieval character.

Marienberg Abbey

The Benedictine Marienberg Abbey is located above Burgeis and is an important religious and historical site in the region. Particularly worth seeing are the well-preserved Romanesque frescoes in the crypt and the abbey’s own library.
The monastery museum provides information about monastic life, printing, and the history of the abbey.

Churburg – Vinschgau’s Best-Preserved Castle

The Churburg Castle, located above Schluderns, dates back to the 13th century and was expanded in Renaissance style. It houses one of Europe’s largest armories, displaying original preserved armor, weapons, and furnishings.
The castle can be visited through guided tours.

Vinschgau Museum

The Vintschger Museum in Schluderns tells the story and development of the Vinschgau region from prehistoric times to the present day. Its main focuses include archaeology, agriculture, the traditional irrigation system of the Waal channels, and everyday life in the valley. Temporary exhibitions and a dedicated children's area make the museum especially engaging for families.

Waal Trails – Hiking Along Historic Water Channels

The Waal Trails originally served agricultural irrigation purposes. Today, they invite you to take easy hikes through well-maintained cultural landscapes—with views of farms, fields, and historic sites. The traditional irrigation systems of the "Waale" are recognized as intangible UNESCO cultural heritage and offer insight into the region’s cultural legacy.

Traditions and Special Events

Throughout the year, various traditional events take place in Upper Vinschgau, including:

  • Scheibenschlagen in spring
  • Farmers’ markets and village fairs in summer
  • Almabtrieb (cattle drive) in autumn

These festivals are an integral part of local life and offer visitors authentic insights into regional traditions.
