Discover the cultural highlights of the Vinschgau Valley
The Venosta Valley looks back on a long and colourful history. The cultural offerings in the valley are, accordingly, rich and varied and characterised by an abundance of castles and fortresses. Very often these historical buildings enjoy majestic settings on hills looking down over the towns and villages. One such castle is Churburg. Set above the village of Sluderno, it is home to Europe’s largest collection of mediaeval armaments. Equally recommendable are Kastelbell Castle and Juval Castle, home of the legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner. Also well worth visiting are the picturesque village of Glorenza, Marienberg Monastery, Lasa marble and the Stelvio pass road.
The cultural offerings in the Venosta Valley do not, however, only consist of historical buildings. Here, in the west of South Tyrol, ancient customs and traditions have been preserved over generations.
One particular highlight is the cuisine of the region. Written off for many years as “poor man’s food”, Venosta cuisine is now an integral part of the menus in many top restaurants. Locally grown products in particular, including apples, buckwheat, rye, asparagus and old fruit varieties such as apricots and “Palabirnen” pears, are frequently used in South Tyrolean cuisine.
